Before anyone looks at your website, most customers see your Google Business Profile first: the box with your hours, your rating, your photos and a map pin. It is often the first impression, and for a lot of searches it is the only thing someone looks at before deciding whether to call.
If you have never gone back and checked the basics on your own listing, this is the short version of what actually matters.
Claim it and keep access
The first step, if you have not already done it, is making sure your shop actually owns and controls its own Google Business Profile, rather than an old listing someone else set up years ago. If you are not sure who has admin access to yours, that is worth sorting out before anything else on this list, because none of the rest matters if you cannot log in to change it.
Get the category right
Your primary business category has a real effect on which searches you show up for. A shop categorized only as "tire shop" may not show up for someone searching for brake repair, even if you do that work every day. A shop categorized only as "auto repair" may lose ground on tire-specific searches. Pick the primary category that matches what actually brings in the most business, and add secondary categories for the rest of what you do.
Match your details everywhere
Your name, address and phone number need to match exactly across your Google listing, your website and anywhere else you are listed. A small mismatch, like a suite number that is on your website but missing on Google, or a phone number that changed after a move, can quietly hurt how much Google trusts the listing. Check this every few months, not just once.
Hours that are actually true
Wrong hours cost more trust than almost anything else on the profile, because a customer who drives to a closed shop rarely gives it a second chance. Update hours for holidays and seasonal changes as soon as you know them, not the week of.
Photos that look current
A listing with a handful of old, dim or outdated photos reads as inactive, even for a busy shop. A few recent, clear photos of the shop front, the bays and the team do more work than people expect. You do not need a professional shoot. A phone photo taken this month beats a good photo taken three years ago.
Use the features most shops ignore
Two features go underused by most shops:
- Posts, which let you share short updates directly on your listing, useful for seasonal notes or new services
- The Q&A section, which anyone can post to, including you. Seeding it with a few real questions, like whether you work on a certain make or offer a certain service, gets ahead of visitors asking the same thing over and over
How this connects to your website
Your Google Business Profile and your website should agree on every detail: hours, services offered, address, phone number. When they match, it reinforces to Google that the information is accurate, which helps both show up more reliably. When they disagree, even slightly, it creates doubt that can quietly hurt both.
A quick note on services listed
Your profile also has a place to list specific services, separate from the category. A tire shop that lists winter tire installation, flat repair and wheel alignment as distinct services gives Google more to match against specific searches than a shop that only lists "tires" as a single line. The same goes for a repair shop listing brakes, diagnostics and battery service separately rather than lumping everything under "general repair." A few extra minutes filling this section out properly is worth more than it looks like it should be.
What to check this week
Log in to your Google Business Profile and check five things: who has access, your primary category, your hours, your last photo upload date, and whether your address matches your website exactly. Fix anything that is wrong. This takes fifteen minutes and it is one of the highest-value things you can do for how easily people find your shop.
Keep your listing and your site in sync
Top Local Auto builds your site to match your real details, so your hours, address and services stay consistent everywhere a customer might find you. It costs nothing to start, and it is 149 a month, month to month, if you keep it. Build your site and keep everything lined up.
